Insulation
Due to the property being over 100 years old we are limited to the modern insulation techniques we can use, however we are making every effort to use whatever methods we can. We have  increased our loft insulation to the recommended depth.we have replaced the old, ineffective double glazing and had secondary glazing units added to the old sash windows and the original bay window. This draft proofs the windows while retaining the original features.
This property is one of the first designs to use cavity walls and as such it retains the heat of the sun it catches as the living space faces south, however it is unsuitable for modern cavity wall insulation.

Cleaning
We use steam for cleaning whever possible, this drastically reduces the need for harsh chemicals and is very hygenic, it also reduces the risk of irritation in those sensitive to these chemicals.
Energy Saving
We have changed our lightbulbs to low energy where possible
We use washballs instead of detergents. The advantage is that there is no heavy packages to carry home and it is cheaper. There is no polution involved and the results are great and again no irritation for the more sensitive of us!. If you tried these and found them lacking as I did some years ago, give them another try as they are much improved. Believe it or not they even get rid of bad stains. I am impressed!
We dry washing naturally where possible and keep the use of the tumble dryer to a minimum.

Environmental
We take part in the local recycling schemes and separate glass, tin, paper, cardboard and plastic and place them in the appropriate bins for collection and recycling by the local authority.
All suitable leftovers are put out for the birds and all other food waste is sent for composting.
We do not burn fossil fuels on the open fire during the winter (coal), we burn reclaimed wood and logs. Wood is a renewable source and the more we use from managed forests, the more young trees are planted, young trees use more carbon dioxide and produce more oxygen than old trees so this  is good for the balance of the panet and helps neutralize the carbon footprint of the business. We burn wood that others have thrown away, we reclaim it with their permission to save it going into landfill. We also burn logs from a managed source on special occasions as it is asthetically pleasing.

We have now had our front door replaced with a custom, handmade, hardwood door. The materials came from managed sources and we are really pleased with it. For those of you who have stayed with us before you will notice the difference.

WE USE SOLAR POWER TO HEAT OUR WATER!!
This is an exciting new feature , it makes bills cheaper and gives us an easier life. The panel uses DAYLIGHT, not sunlight, so it works all year round and if you would like any more information on this feature and how it has enhanced the running of the business, please get in touch with us and we will be pleased to answer any questions you may have. We definitely recommend this method of heating your water and it won't be long before a central heating system is refined to work off it too!
For properties in an area where there is no mains gas, like us, this is a real innovation.
Other efforts to reduce our carbon footprint. Future Plans
We plan to restore the windows in the front of the property to double glazed, wooden sash windows to put back the period features with a modern twist.
We hope this has given you an insight into our efforts in this area and please check back soon to see the update on our progress.

Thank you for your interest.
